HOW TO commission an artwork faq

Contact me and tell me what you what your vision is.

After a discussion with you, I will send you a proposed artwork and a quote.

Once you accept the quote and pay a deposit, I commence creating your artwork.

Once the painting has your final approval and is delivered, the final payment is made.

Paintings

The cost of a specified painting will vary according to your request. It will depend on the size and the detail that is required and whether it is acrylic or oil. Sometimes small intricate work can cost more than a very large painting with less detail.

Sometimes, if what you want is just too much for your budget, I can propose an artwork that could still let you achieve your vision, while still being within your budget i.e. I can quote to your budget.

Portraits

The cost of a portrait is generally by the face and not by the size of the portrait, so you can have a wall sized portrait or a small 500 x 500mm portrait and there will be a similar price. It is all in the technique and process of painting a face rather than the size or the material.

Acrylic and Oil Portrait: $2000 per face

Large (1200mm - 2000mm) Acrylic and Oil Portrait: $3000 per face

Limited Palette Acrylic Portrait: $1000 per face

Large (1200mm - 2000mm) Limited Palette Acrylic Portrait: $2000 per face

- Ideal Size - Is this for a particular space in your home? Have a look at how you are going to need to hang your painting. Generally a painting should be hung at eye level, so if you are hanging a painting above a piece of furniture you need to take into account how high from the ground and furniture and how far down from the ceiling your artwork needs to be.

- Description: Is there a particular colour palette that you are after? Are there any paintings or elements in paintings that I have created that you would like in your painting? Can you provide a reference image that shows what you are after? Or do you just want my imagination to create something beautiful?

- Your Budget: Sometimes, if what you want is just too much for your budget, I can propose an artwork that could still let you achieve your vision, while still being within your budget i.e. I can quote to your budget.

- Your Ideal Finish Date. Is this for a special occasion?

- Will your painting require shipping? If you are outside Sydney, I can include the shipping cost in my quote or you can arrange your own shipping.

- The subject: If the subject of the portrait is in Sydney, then it is best to make an appointment so the person can visit the studio. I will take photos to capture detailed information about their skin, hair and eyes. Sometimes the commissioned portrait can be for a surprise gift, or you and the portrait subject are not in Sydney and so, in these situations, I require a selection of your favourite photographs that reflect the person as you perceive them and that also have enough information in the photos to give detail on the subject's skin, hair and eyes.

- Is this for a set of portraits? Are you planning on matching the portrait size with other portraits to be done at a later date? Or is it to match portraits that you already have. Some people like to match with portraits from earlier generations.

If you are after more than one person in a painting - the price of the painting will be based on the number of faces in the painting. I prefer to do individual portraits and recommend that you do an individual portrait for each person rather than combining the subjects into one painting. This means that the paintings can be hung as a set on your wall and as the years go by, be moved to different positions and places.

Examples:
- If you want a family portrait, each child can be treated as a subject individually and then hung as a set. In time these portraits will probably move to your children's homes and go down their generations.

- If you wish an engagement or wedding portrait, I recommend that two modern portraits with an Italian Florentine element are painted where the subjects are positioned towards each other..

Of course! You are more than welcome to make an appointment to visit my studio to view your artworks progress and also look at other available artworks.

There will be several times during the commission process where your viewing of the artwork in progress and your input will be required.

Portraits

In commissioning a portrait, the subject of the portrait is in Sydney, then it is best to make an appointment so the person can visit the studio.

I will contact you to view the portrait just before the point of no return where no more changes can be made. This is to check your facial recognition of the portrait subject and get information from you of any personal features that need to be added.

When your portrait is complete, I will contact you to view it for your final approval.

Paintings

Once your painting has commenced, there will be two main progress points where your input and approval is required. The first will be at the point of no return where no more changes can be made. This is so you can see that the painting is moving towards your vision.

When your artwork is complete, I will contact you to view it for your final approval.

With portraits, if the portrait subject is not in Sydney, I require a selection of your favourite photographs that reflect the person as you perceive them and that also have enough information in the photos to give me the unique details on the subject's skin, hair and eyes.

With all artworks, if you are outside of Sydney, I will send you photos of the painting at various stages so you can see the progress. When the artwork is complete, you will be sent final images of the artwork for your approval.

Your artwork commences upon payment of 50% deposit.

If you are in Sydney, final payment is upon delivery of the artwork.

if you are not in Sydney or an Australian business, the final payment will need to be made through a legitimate escrow service such as escrow.com or transpact.com who can release the funds after the artwork has been delivered.
